Dos Pueblos wrestling’s Francisco Miguel Espinosa and Santa Barbara High basketball’s Dayzia Mendoza put together impressive performances last week to earn Athlete of the Week honors.
Espinosa and Mendoza will be honored at next Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe, as there was no luncheon this week due to the impacts of this weekend’s storm.
The Chargers impressed at the Channel League wrestling championships on Saturday, and they were led by Espinosa.
He finished in first place in the 108-pound weight class, securing three victories all on pins and earning a team-high 26 points. As a result, he qualified for the CIF-SS playoffs.
Meanwhile, Mendoza wrapped up her season with a record-breaking performance for the Dons.
In a dominant 72-33 win over Rio Mesa, Mendoza dropped 37 points and knocked down a program-record nine three-pointers. She also collected 11 rebounds.
The boys honorable mentions were Eddie Perez (Bishop Diego Basketball), Coulter Jay (Dos Pueblos Basketball), Dante Bruice (San Marcos Basketball), Finn Whipps (Santa Barbara Basketball), Sebastian Reed (Carpinteria Basketball), Kevin Sanchez (San Marcos Soccer) and Kamil Abdul-Nafeo (Cate Soccer).
Meanwhile, the honorable mentions for the girls were Lilli Nemetz (Carpinteria Water Polo), Serenity Stanfield (San Marcos Water Polo), Layla Szymczak (Santa Barbara Water Polo), Nalani Yim (Santa Barbara Water Polo), Jamaica Cook (Carpinteria Basketball) and Carley Nielsen (San Marcos Basketball).
