San Marcos water polo’s Nic Prentice and Santa Barbara High tennis’ Nicole Buist rose to the occasion and put together standout performances in playoff games last week.
Their play earned them the Athlete of the Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Prentice has been one of the leaders of the Royals water polo team all season long, and he kept it up in each of last week’s playoff matchups.
In a Round 2 faceoff against Northwood, he scored a trio of goals en route to the team’s 14-7 win to begin their quest to a Division 2 title.
He then followed that up with an impressive all-around performance in an 8-5 win over Riverside Poly in the Quarterfinals, collecting five goals, four steals and two exclusions drawn.
Buist also had a big week competing in the CIF Division 2 tournament.
She opened up the week with a 3-0 record in singles play in the Dons’ 11-7 win over Hart to advance to the second round.
In the next matchup, she came up clutch with a comeback victory in singles play to help the team earn a 10-8 win over Vista Murrieta and a spot in the CIF quarterfinals.
The boys honorable mentions were Sebastian Sutch (Cate Cross Country), Andreas Dybdahl (Santa Barbara Cross Country), Reggie Robles (Dos Pueblos Water Polo), Spencer Hlavaty (Laguna Blanca Football), Abel Renteria (Santa Barbara Football) and Kayden Chan (SBCC Football).
On the girls side, the honorable mentions were Ellie Triplett (Dos Pueblos Tennis), Mel Mayo (Dos Pueblos Tennis), Haley Hubbs (Bishop Diego Tennis) and Kiala Haas (San Marcos Cross Country).
