Cainan Birchim helped vault Santa Barbara High cross country to its first-ever CIF state title while Carpinteria water polo freshman Hazel Dugre impressed in her debut to earn Athlete of the Week honors.
The pair was honored at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Birchim followed up a solid performance in the CIF-SS Finals with an impressive finish in the CIF state meet, placing 12th with a time of 15:31.1.
His race, along with the times of his teammates, powered the Dons to the program’s first CIF state title, winning the Division 2 crown.
Dugre, in her high school debut, lit up the scoreboard with a game-high eight goals in Carpinteria’s season opener.
Her strong effort led the charge as the Warriors took down Foothill Tech by a score of 17-2.
The boys honorable mentions were Andreas Dybdahl (Santa Barbara High Cross Country) and Joe Pasternack (San Marcos Basketball).
Meanwhile, the honorable mentions on the girls side were Dayzia Mendoza (Santa Barbara High Basketball) and Justine Katz (Dos Pueblos Basketball).
The Athlete of the Week award winners are selected by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Saturday morning, if possible.
