San Marcos swimmer Taylor Steelman and Mason Rice of the Royals’ boys volleyball team were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s final Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon of the school year.
Steelman helped the San Marcos girls win their eight straight Channel League team title by winning a pair of individual events and swimming on two victorious relays. She captured 100 backstroke (59.06) and 500 freestyle (5:05.36) and was the lead swimmer on the 200 medley relay team (1:50.83) and the second leg on the 400 free relay (3:29.95).
Steelman and the Royals are headed to the CIF-SS Prelims and Finals this week.
Rice was force at the net for the boys volleyball team in a sweep of Anaheim-Canyon on Saturday. He had six total blocks and four solos to go with 12 kills on a .390 hitting percentage in the CIF-SS Division 2 second-round victory.
Rice and San Marcos will be back at the Thunderhut on Wednesday to place second-seeded Servite in a quarterfinal match.
The male honorable mention choices were Sebastian Sutch (Cate track & field), Michael Wang (Laguna Blanca golf), Jaran Depew (San Marcos swimming), Evan Encell-O’Hara, Conor Dolan (Dos Pueblos track) and Joey and Charlie Friedman (San Marcos tennis).
The other female student athletes considered for the award were Kennedy Kirkland (Cate track & field), Ava Carter (San Marcos track & field), Makenzie Fauver (San Marcos track & field) and Kendall Keshen (Laguna Blanca swimming).
The Athletes of the Week are selected by a vote of the local sports media.
The award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
This is the final award for 2022-23 school year. The Round Table will honor the Athletes of the Year in each high school and college sport at its Evening With The Athletes on Monday, May 22 at the Majorie Luke Theater.
