Santa Barbara High wrestler Pepper Marks and Marcus Scudder of the Cate boys basketball team were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Marks wrote another chapter in South Coast sports history as she won her second straight CIF-SS individual wrestling championship last Saturday at the Central Division Tournament at Canyon Springs High. She also was recognized as the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament for the upper weight classes.
Last year, Marks became the first girls wrestler on the South Coast to win a CIF title.
Marks will next compete at the CIF-SS Masters state qualifying meet this weekend at Palm Springs High. The top eight finishers advanced to the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.
Scudder led the Cate boys basketball to a pair of playoff wins last week to put the Rams in the CIF-SS 4A Division quarterfinals.
He scored a team-high 17 points in a first-round 57-40 win against Northview. In a second-round road game at Santa Ana, he scored 16 points and held Santa Ana’s top scorer to three points in the second half of a 60-56 victory.
Cate plays at second-seeded Long Beach Jordan in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday.
The honorable mention choices for the award include Josh Pierre-Louis (UCSB basketball), Victoria Bernard (Dos Pueblos wrestling), Kai Mault (Santa Barbara High baseball), Jacob Dominguez (San Marcos wrestling) and Luke Zuffelato (Santa Barbara High basketball).
The Athlete of the Week award is selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
The award is sponsored by the law firm Maho-Prentice.
