Bishop Diego softball player Madeline Ferries and Tyson Deveze of the Laguna Blanca boys volleyball team were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Conference at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Ferries pitched a pair of shutout victories in the first two games of the season for the Cardinals. She allowed only a total of three hits in the wins.
Ferries also produced at the plate, hitting .400 with an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.029 and a slugging percentage of .600, according to her coach MeLinda Matsumoto.
Deveze led Laguna Blanca to the championship at the Chadwick Volleyball Tournament over the weekend in Palos Verdes. In beating five opponents, the outside hitter delivered 23 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, picked up 13 digs and served 15 aces.
He was named MVP of the tournament.
The other male student athletes considered for this week’s award included Miles Norris (UCSB basketball), Hansen Streeter (San Marcos volleyball) and Corey Nunez (UCSB baseball).
The female honorable mention choices were Caitlyn Early (San Marcos softball), Sierra Gronquist (Santa Barbara track & field), Pepper Marks (Santa Barbara wrestling) and Stefanie Berberabe (Westmont basketball).
The Athletes of the Week are selected by members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 11 a.m.
