San Marcos wrestler Jacob Dominguez and basketball player Michelle Arellanes were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
The SBART didn’t hold a press luncheon on Monday due to the heavy rainstorm. The honorees will be recognized at the next luncheon on Jan. 23.
Dominguez bounced back from his first loss of the season in a dual meet with a championship at the Arroyo Classic in El Monte. He captured the 106-pound weight class, winning four matches by pins, including the final. He rallied from a 2-0 deficit and pinned the top-seeded wrestler in the last six seconds of the match.
In his loss earlier in the week, he wrestled up two weight classes and was beaten by Cody Pearce of Dos Pueblos in a 12-5 decision.
Arellanes led the San Marcos girls basketball team to a pair of big wins over Dos Pueblos and Buena.
She scored 12 points in a 61-44 win against Buena. It was the first time in San Marcos history that the Royals beat the Bulldogs.
Earlier last week, Arellanes tallied 11 points, dished out several assists and made some key plays on defense to help the Royals hold off Dos Pueblos, 48-39.
The other female athletes considered for this week’s award included Erin Otsuki (Carpinteria water polo), Victoria Bernard (Dos Pueblos wrestling) and Anya Choice (UCSB basketball).
The male honorable mention choices were Cody Pearce (Dos Pueblos wrestling), Luke Zuffelato (Santa Barbara High basketball) and Ajay Mitchell (UCSB basketball).
The Athletes of the Week are selected by a vote of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to submit nominations. They should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
The award is sponsored by the law firm Maho-Prentice.
