The first week of the high school basketball season produced the male and female honorees for the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Athlete of the Week Award.
Babacar Pouye of the Cate boys basketball team and Bishop Diego’s Jaymi Coronado were named the award recipients.
There was no SBART Press Luncheon on Monday due to the Thanksgiving holiday week. Pouye and Coronado will be presented their awards at next luncheon on Monday, Nov. 28 at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Pouye opened his senior season with a monster performance. He scored 34 points and grabbed 28 rebounds in a 51-33 win over Dunn.
Coronado led the Bishop Diego girls to a 4-1 week and a runner-up finish at the Santa Maria Tournament. She averaged 17 points and three steals in the four tournament games.
The honorable mention selections include : Luke Zuffelato (Santa Barbara High basketball), Claire Daland (SBCC women’s water polo), Jose Escobar (Santa Barbara High wrestling), Blaise Snow (Santa Barbara cross country) and Eamon Gordon (Dos Pueblos cross country).
The Athletes of the Week are selected by a vote from members by the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes. Nominations should be submitted to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday morning.
