San Marcos volleyball player Elena Thomas and Bishop Diego football’s Bryan Trejo were named the Athletes of the Week during Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Thomas, a sophomore outside hitter for the Royals, was a force at the net in a sweep over rival Dos Pueblos in a battle of Channel League leaders last Thursday. She put away 16 kills to go with eight digs and a service ace. Earlier, in a win over Buena, she recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs, and served three aces.
San Marcos finished the first round of league play at 6-1 and is tied for first place with Santa Barbara.
Trejo keyed a strong defensive effort by Bishop Diego in a 26-6 non-league football win at St. Pius X/St. Matthias Academy in Downey. The senior intercepted two passes to help shut down a potent team that had outscored its previous four opponents 165-38.
Trejo also kicked a 38-yard field at the end of the first half to give the Cardinals (4-1) a 17-0 lead.
The honorable mention choices for this week’s awards include Caroline McCarty (SBCC volleyball), Nicole Schuetz (Santa Barbara High volleyball), Jeffery Lechuga, (Santa Barbara High football), Pen Brooks (Cate football), Erik Guerrero (Westmont College soccer).
