It was a day of firsts for the winners of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Athletes of the Week award.
Carpinteria High’s Talon Tumble quarterbacked the Warriors to their first win since the 2019 season, while Bishop Diego’s Eliana Urzua played her first match as setter and helped the Cardinals sweep rival Laguna Blanca.
Urzua, a powerful outside hitter who led Bishop Diego to the CIF-SS Division 7 championship and the state regional semifinals as a freshman last season, was moved to setter after the team’s 1-5 start. She had a solid debut, dishing out 14 assists to go with nine kills and 10 service aces in a sweep of rival Laguna Blanca.
Carpinteria defeated Channel Islands, 16-14, and snapped a 14-game losing streak behind the play of Tumble. In his first year playing quarterback, he rushed for 160 yards on 28 carries, scored a touchdown and had a 2-point conversion. He also threw for a score and completed 8 of 12 passes.
The honorable mention choices for the awards include Caroline McCarty (SBCC volleyball), Chloe Hoffman (Dos Pueblos volleyball), Jerrard Burford (Santa Barbara High boys water polo) and Garo Nahabedian (Bishop Diego football).
There was no Round Table Press Luncheon on Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. The award winners will be recognized at next Monday’s luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
The Athlete of the Week award is sponsored by the law firm Maho-Prentice.
Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes for the award. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday.
