Greg Tripathi, the kicker for the Dos Pueblos football team, and Santa Barbara High volleyball outside hitter Shae Delany were honored as the Athletes of the Week at the first Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon of the 2022-23 school year on Monday at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Tripathi booted a 41-yard field goal in the final second to lift Dos Pueblos to a 22-19 season-opening victory at Burbank.
The senior earlier kicked a 31-yard field goal and two extra points in the game. On his punts, he averaged 60 yards with a hang time of more than four seconds.
Delany had a big first week of the season for the Dons. She blasted a team-best 22 kills and picked up 15 digs in a four-set win at Bishop Diego in a battle of CIF-SS division champions from last year. She also was the kill leader in a five-set win at Simi Valley and at the Bishop Diego Cardinal Classic at the UCSB Thunderdome.
Santa Barbara finished fifth in the tournament’s 20-team Gold Division.
The Athlete of the Week honorable mention choices were Sagarika Manian (Dos Pueblos girls golf), Andre McCullough (San Marcos football), Qu’Ran Gossett (Bishop Diego football), Misa Paiau (Bishop Diego football) and Kai Mault (Santa Barbara High football).
The Athlete of the Week award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes for the honor. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 12 p.m.
