Track & field competitors are gearing up for the postseason, and Makenzie Fauver and Justin Hess of San Marcos showed at last weekend’s Santa Barbara County Championships that they are ready to make a strong run at league and CIF titles.
The two junior standouts for the Royals were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe. Their pair combined for five titles at the county meet, helping the Royals win the sweepstakes title.
Fauver broke 16 seconds for the first time in winning the 100 hurdles as she clocked a personal best of 15.85. She also won the 300 hurles (47.84) and took second in the triple jump with a PR of 32-11.25
Hess was a triple county champion. He captured the 400 (50.730, 200 (22.81) was on a winning 4×400 relay. The San Marcos soccer standout also was part of a third-place 4×100 relay.
This week, Fauver and Hess will be competing at the Channel League Championships in Santa Ynez.
The honorable mention choices for this week’s award include Caitlyn Early (San Marcos softball), Avery Ball (Dos Pueblos girls lacrosse), Shams Jahangir-Arshad (San Marcos golf) and Ryan Speshyock (Dos Pueblos baseball).
The athletes of the week are determined by a vote from members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate worthy student athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
