Kellan Montgomery of the Dos Pueblos baseball team and Kate Guerra of San Marcos softball were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Montgomery sparked Dos Pueblos to a 4-3 rivalry win over San Marcos, the Royals’ first loss in Channel League play. The senior ignited a four-run third inning with a two-out run-scoring triple.
He also pitched three innings of relief and struck out four.
Montgomery has signed with Long Beach State.
Guerra was clutch on the mound for San Marcos in a 3-1 win over Dos Pueblos in a crosstown Channel League game.
She allowed three hits and no earned runs in handing Dos Pueblos its first league loss. The Chargers are 6-1 in league and the Royals 7-2.
Guerra walked two and struck out two, with both strikeouts ending the sixth and seventh innings.
The student athletes recognized as honorable mention choices were Troy Fitzgerald (Dos Pueblos volleyball), Max Stone (Carpinteria tennis), Leo Metzger (San Marcos golf), Joaquin Sandoval (San Marcos baseball), Lucas Chin (San Marcos track & field), Tessa Johansen (Bishop Diego softball), Tara Gregson (Bishop Diego softball), Makenzie Fauver (San Marcos girls track & field) and Avery Ball (Dos Pueblos girls lacrosse).
The athletes of the week are determined by a vote of local sports media members.
Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes each week. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
