High-diving Jessica Norman of San Marcos High and long-jumping Davis Flanagin of rival Santa Barbara were named as the female and male Athlete of the Week Award winners during Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Norman, a converted gymnast competing in her first season on the Royals’ swimming and diving team, earned a career-high score to finish first at Saturday’s Ventura Diving Invitational. The mark also qualified her for next month’s CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Diving Championships in Mission Viejo.
Flanagin won the triple jump at the Simi Valley Track and Field Invitational with a leap of 43-9.5. He also placed fifth in the invitational round of the long jump with a mark of 21-1.5 and ran the lead-off leg of the 4×400 relay team that finished third in the Invitational race.
Receiving honorable mention this week were Jenna Hayes (Bishop Diego girls softball), Ainslee Alexander, (Carpinteria girls track and field), Eric Anthony (Santa Barbara boys baseball) and Sebastian Sutch (Cate boys track and field).
The Athlete of the Week award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student athletes each week. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
