Santa Barbara High wrestler Pepper Marks and Dos Pueblos basketball player Joaquin Riker were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athlete Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Marks made local sports history over the weekend by becoming the first girls wrestler to win a CIF-Southern Section championship.
The junior captured the 235-pound weight class title at the CIF-SS Southern Divisional Championship at San Dimas High.
She advances to the CIF Masters Meet at Marina High in Huntington Beach, where the top eight placers qualify for the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.
Riker had a big night in his first CIF-SS basketball playoff game. The senior knocked down a trio of three-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points in a 76-54 victory over Anaheim in Division 4A first-round contest.
The Chargers advance to a second-round game at Faith Baptist on Tuesday in Canoga Park.
The male honorable mention choices for the award include Juan Escobar (San Marcos soccer), Owen Estabrook (San Marcos baseball), Bryan Trejo (Bishop Diego basketball), Ajay Mitchell (UCSB basketball).
Justine Katz of Dos Pueblos girls basketball was the female honorable mention choice.
