The Athlete of the Week honors went to a pair of high school basketball players at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Freshman Carson Stewart of Laguna Blanca and junior Michelle Arellanes of San Marcos were presented the awards for their performances on the court.
Arellanes scored 20 points to lead the Royals girls to a 55-51 overtime victory over Channel League rival Dos Pueblos in the championship game of the Fillmore Tournament.
Stewart had a great start to his high school career. He poured in 31 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Laguna Blanca’s season-opening 60-45 win over Orcutt Academy.
The male honorable mention choices for this week’s award are Calvin Wishart (UCSB basketball), Babacar Pouye (Cate basketball) and Trenton Luera (SBCC football).
The female athletes considered for the award include Clara McDonald (Bishop Diego basketball), Dayzia Mendoza (Santa Barbara basketball), Ava Stryker (San Marcos water polo), Ila Lane (UCSB basketball) and Sydney Brown (Westmont basketball).
The Athlete of the Week award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
