Kevin Brophy was honored as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Brophy is one of the original athletes who advocated for golf to be adopted by the Santa Barbara Special Olympics more than six years ago, said coach Matt Collier.
“Kevin really came forward and pushed the Special Olympics office in Santa Barbara to take up golf as a main sport,” said Collier.
Brophy won a gold medal in a partner competition in 2018.
In addition to golf, Brophy has played bocce ball and softball.
“Kevin is a great guy. He’s there for all the athletes, and shows up on time every time we have a practice on Sundays,” said Collier. “He gives great advice to some of our newer players, especially around the areas of the rules of golf and the etiquette on the golf course.
“One of the things I admire about Kevin is just how he supports everybody that’s out there each and every week,” said Collier. “He’s a remarkable person. He’s got a lovely support person here in Lisa, his wife.”
Brophy is employed at KEYT-TV, where he has worked for 27 years.
“He’s a great community person in terms of involvement in the community,” said Collier.
The Special Olympics Athlete of the Month award is sponsored by Guaranteed Rate, a mortgage lending firm.
