Clutch performances turned in by Dos Pueblos High cross country runner Ellie Gleason and SBCC football player Marcus Bellon earned them Athlete of the Week honors from the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
Gleason and Bellon will be presented their awards at the next press luncheon on Nov. 29 at Harry’s Plaza Cafe. There was no SBART Press Luncheon on Monday due to the Thanksgiving holiday break.
Gleason was clutch for the Dos Pueblos girls cross country team at the CIF-SS Division 3 Finals at Mt. San Antonio College.
She passed 21 runners in the second half of the 3-mile race to finish in 27th place, helping the Chargers place fifth as a team and qualify for this weekend’s CIF State Championships in Fresno.
Bellon had a huge game for SBCC in a 49-19 victory over Orange Coast College, scoring three touchdowns in three different ways.
The redshirt freshman from Truckee scored two touchdowns on special teams — an 84-yard punt return and a kickoff return of 90 yards — and caught a deflected pass that he turned into an 18-yard touchdown play.
“… That guy just makes plays. He’s a gamer,” said SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos of Bellon.
The honorable mention choices for the award were Megan Anderson (UCSB women’s basketball), Elle Stone (Santa Barbara High girls basketball), Grace Duckens (Westmont women’s soccer) and Eamon Gordon (Dos Pueblos boys cross country).
The Athletes of the Week are chosen by a vote of the local sports media. Coaches are encourage to nominate their athletes. Nominations should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
