Cate School football player Mason Oetgen and Jenna Olsen of the SBCC water polo team were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Olsen was an offensive force at the SoCal Regionals, scoring 12 goals in three tournament victories, powering the Vaqueros to their first regional title since 2017.
She had five goals in a semifinal win over Long Beach and three in the title victory over Fullerton.
SBCC (29-6) moves on to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships at Las Positas College in Livermore and opens against San Joaquin Delta (28-7) on Friday. West Valley (30-2) and Fullerton (23-4) play in the other semifinal.
Oetgen made huge plays for Cate in a 21-16 CIF-SS Division 1 8-man football semifinal win over Sage Hill of Newport Beach.
The victory sends the Rams to their first-ever CIF final. They’ll play Grace Brethren on Friday night at Carpinteria High.
Oetgen caught two touchdown passes, blocked a Sage Hill PAT and made a key interception in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead.
The male honorable mention choices were Asher Smith (Carpinteria water polo, and a previous winner), Marcus Bellson (SBCC football), Jacob Snodgress (San Marcos cross country) and Eamon Gordon (Dos Pueblos cross country).
The other female athletes considered for the award included Bella Johnson (SBCC volleyball) and Anna DiSorbo (Cate cross country).
