Santa Barbara High seniors Emma Zuffelato and Vince Gamberdella were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Zuffelato led the Dons’ girls volleyball team to five-set victories over Dos Pueblos and San Marcos during the same week to vault itself into the league title hunt. The outside hitter posted double-doubles in both matches.
Against DP, Zuffelato put away 14 kills and picked up 12 digs. She added another 14 kills and 11 digs in the win at San Marcos.
By avenging first-round defeats against its rivals, Santa Barbara moved into a tie for second place in the Channel League with San Marcos.
Gamberdella, a senior linebacker for the 5-1 Santa Barbara football team, recorded a sack and made numerous tackles in spearheading a defense that contained Lompoc’s standout running back Sheldon Canley Jr. in a 44-38 victory in the Channel League opener at Lompoc.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Dons.
The male honorable mention choices for this week’s award include Ethan Dwelley (San Marcos cross country), Abel Renteria (Santa Barbara High football and previous award winner), and Finn Ballard McBride (UCSB soccer).
The female honorable mention choices were Heidi Hatton (Santa Barbara High tennis) and Anna DiSorbo (Cate cross country).
Coaches are encouraged to submit nominations for Athlete of the Week. Submissions should be sent to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Athlete of the Week awards are sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
