Andre McCullough, Makeila Cervantes Recognized as Round Table Athletes of the Week

The impact juniors Andre McCullough and Makeila Cervantes made for their respective teams in victories last week earned them Athletic of the Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

Makeila Cervantes, Dos Pueblos volleyball.
Andre McCullough, San Marcos football.

McCullough, a speedy running back for the San Marcos football team, rushed for 186 yards on 25 carries and scored both touchdowns in a 14-0 win over Channel Islands for the Royals’ first in the Pacific View League. One of McCullough’s touchdowns was a 67-yard run.

He has rush for more than 100 yards in five of San Marcos’ seven games.

Cervantes provided a huge spark for the Dos Pueblos girls volleyball team in its sweep of rival San Marcos that clinched a tie for the Channel League title. The left-handed opposite hitter hammered 10 kills, had a couple of blocks and a service ace to balance out the Chargers’ attack in their second victory over San Marcos this season.

Dos Pueblos, ranked second in CIF-Southern Section Division 3, can clinch its first outright league title since 2011 with a win over Lompoc on Tuesday.

The honorable mention choices for this week’s female award were Paige Rudi (SBCC volleyball) and Eden Tal (SBCC water polo).

The other male athletes nominate for the award include Owen Lauderdale (San Marcos football), Ryan Drake (Santa Barbara High water polo), and Jack Holdren (Santa Barbara football).

The Athletes of the Week are voted on by the local sports media. Nominations from coaches are encouraged. Please send nominations to sports@noozhawk.com.
