It was a big week for Dos Pueblos athletics, as the Chargers won a crosstown football game and a girls volleyball match against San Marcos.
Two Charger athletes that were instrumental in those victories were named Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Senior outsider hitter Portia Sherman from the volleyball team and football’s junior linebacker/running back David Buso received the honors.
Buso led a rugged Dos Pueblos defense with 10 tackled and was the featured back on the clinching touchdown drive. He ran three times for the final 26 yards to give the Chargers a 17-7 win.
Sherman had a massive match for DP in a four-set victory at San Marcos that gave the Chargers sole possession of first place in the Channel League. The Hawaii commit for beach volleyball pounded 20 kills and had a whopping 40 digs before a full house at the Thunderhut.
She followed that performance with a double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs in a sweep over Lompoc.
Dos Pueblos is currently ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 4.
The female honorable choices for the week include Natasha Gill (San Marcos tennis), Anna DiSorbo (Cate cross country) and Karoline Ruiz (SBCC volleyball).
The male athletes considered for the award were Will Bouma (Cate 8-man football), Jerry Martin (SBCC football), Wyatt Pieretti (Santa Barbara High football) and Michael Luckhurst (Bishop Diego football).
The Athletes of the Week Award is sponsored by the law firm of Maho-Prentice.
The award winners are selected by a vote from members of the local sports media. Coaches are encouraged to submit nominations to sports@noozhawk.com by Sunday at 10 a.m.
