San Marcos QB Joaquin Sandoval, Bishop Diego Volleyball’s Eliana Urzua Named Athletes of the Week

Two athletes who shined in their varsity debuts were named the first Athletes of the Week of the 2021-2022 school year at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.

San Marcos football’s senior quarterback Joaquin Sandoval and freshman outside hitter Eliana Urzua of the Bishop Diego girls volleyball team were presented the awards at the season-opening luncheon.

Urzua led the Cardinals in kills in all six matches they played during the first week of the season. She had 16 kills in a five-set win at La Reina, 12 kills in a loss against Division 3 San Marcos and compiled 28 in four matches (2-2) at the Cardinal Classic tournament. She had a double-double of 10 kills, 12 digs in a victory over Buchanan of Fresno.

Sandoval led San Marcos to a 25-14 season-opening victory over Morro Bay in his first start at quarterback. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a score  He also contributed on defense at strong safety.

The honorable mention choices for the male and female awards were Chloe Hoffman of Dos Pueblos girls volleyball and Andre McCollough of the San Marcos football team.

The Athletic of the Week award winners are determined by a vote from local members of the sports media. Coaches are encouraged to nominate student athletes.  Please send nominations to sports@noozhawk.com by 10 a.m. on Sundays.
