Dos Pueblos volleyball player Chloe Hoffman and Carpinteria water polo’s Asher Smith were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Smith’s performance in the 2-meter position powered Carpinteria to a stunning 12-8 victory over Dos Pueblos in a season-opening game at DP’s pool. The sophomore scored eight goals, including four in the fourth period to seal the win against the Division 1 Chargers.
Carpinteria followed that win with a 14-0 shutout over Royal. Smith scored a team-high three goals in the victory.
Hoffman has been a force for the Dos Pueblos volleyball team, which is 5-0 in full matches and placed third with a 7-3 record at the Camarillo Stinger Classic last weekend.
Hoffman had 54 kills in the tournament, including eight kills, five digs, two aces, three assists and two blocks against Division 1-2 Marlborough. She earned all-tournament honors.
In a match sweep over Rio Mesa, Hoffman recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs. She seven kills in a sweep of Oak Park.
Her teammate Portia Sherman was a honorable mention selection, along with UCSB freshman soccer player Sophia Vivar.
The male honorable mention choices were Jayden Martinez of Bishop Diego football, Vince Gamberdella of Santa Barbara High football and Andre McCullough and Owen Lauderdale of San Marcos football.
