San Marcos soccer’s Lily Bienstock and Sam Meister of the Santa Barbara High boys volleyball team were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at The Creekside Restaurant.
Bienstock recorded a hat trick in the Royals’ 4-0 win over Cabrillo. It was the sixth straight win in Channel League play for San Marcos.
In addition to her performance on the pitch, Bienstock last week signed an offer to continue her soccer career and education at Tufts University.
Meister had an impressive start to his senior career. The 6-foot-5 outside hitter with a 38-inch vertical jump, pounded 25 kills and had three blocks in Santa Barbara’s four-set victory over highly regarded Newbury Park.
The UCSB-bound Meister and the Dons have a big match against crosstown rival San Marcos on Wednesday.
The honorable mention choices in the male division were Joaquin Sandoval (San Marcos baseball), Shakir Ahmad (San Marcos basketball), Shams Jahangir-Arshad (San Marcos golf) and Cyrus Symington (Cate swimming)
The female candidates that were up for the award include Mila Speer (Santa Barbara High track & field), Athena Saragoza (Santa Barbara High basketball), Clara McDonald (Bishop Diego basketball) and Riley Monroe (Dos Pueblos softball).
The Athlete of the Week candidates are chosen by Noozhawk Sports and the winners are determined by a vote from the local sports media.
