Erick Elizalde of SBHS Baseball, San Marcos Softball’s Tiana Monaghan Named Athletes of Week

Santa Barbara High baseball player Erick Elizalde and Tiana Monaghan of the San Marcos softball team were honored as the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at The Creekside Restaurant.

Monaghan, a freshman third baseman for the Royals, had a big day at the plate in an 11-0 win over Santa Paula. She blasted two home runs and collected five RBI for the 4-2 Royals.

Elizalde helped Santa Barbara beat crosstown rivals San Marcos and Dos Pueblos in the same week. In the 1-0 victory at San Marcos, he pitched a perfect sixth and seventh to earn the save. Against Dos Pueblos, he delivered the game-tying hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 4-3 victory. For the two games, he went 4 for 7 at the plate with a walk.

The Dons are 6-3 overall and 4-0 in Channel League.

The male honorable mention choices include Vincent Rinaldi (Carpinteria track & field), Qu’Ran Gossett (Bishop Diego football) and Jordan Sprinkle (UCSB baseball).

The other female candidates for the award were Mila Speer (Santa Barbara High track & field) and Riley Monroe (Dos Pueblos softball).

The candidates for the Athletes of the Week Award are selected by Noozhawk Sports and voted on by the local sports media. Nominations from coaches are encouraged.
