Carpinteria High senior Kenna Mayer has an academic interest in criminology and forensic psychology.
Is a career as a crime scene investigator (CSI) in her future?
Mayer is building an impressive resume in her journey toward reaching her academic goals.
The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table is honoring Mayer as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Carpinteria.
She was recognized by award sponsor Marc Gamberdella and assistant girls soccer coach and teacher Lucy Carlson in a virtual ceremony.
Mayer is three-sport athlete (cheer, soccer and softball) and carries a 4.06 grade point average. Her course load includes English, anatomy, economics, and a college dual-enrollment class in criminal justice.
She’s also taken two dual-enrollment courses in history, as well as Advanced Placement calculus and English honors.
Her college plan is to attend SBCC and transfer to a still-to-be-determined university and pursue a major in forensic psychology, working toward master’s and doctorate degrees.
As a student athlete at Carpinteria, Mayer made the varsity soccer team as a freshman, and was on JV cheer and softball. She’s been a varsity team member in all three sports since her sophomore year, and is the captain of the cheer squad and softball team.
Mayer was named the junior varsity softball MVP as a freshman. On the soccer team, she was the most improved in her freshman and sophomore years.
She’s also played a little baseball.
“When I was in sixth and seventh grade, I played baseball for Santa Barbara Pony League and one season for their all-star team,” she said.
She volunteers with the organizations that got her started in soccer and softball: AYSO and the Carpinteria Valley Girls Softball League.
Softball coach Dakota Wilcox called Mayer “the epitome of what athletics means to a small community like Carpinteria, and is the ideal role model on and off the field.”

The daughter of Kathy and Ray Mayer appreciates living and attending school in Carpinteria.
“I go around the school and say hi to everyone and know everyone,” she said. “I really enjoy that, and I think it really helps in relationships between teachers and coaches and students. That’s another reason why I feel like I did well in high school, because I had a friendly support system and I was friends with the teachers and the coaches. That made me want to work extra hard in my academics.”
Carleton expressed her excitement on Mayer being named the SBART Scholar Athlete of the Year.
“As a parent, teacher and a coach, it’s one of my favorite awards,” she said. “The combination of academic prowess and athletic prowess is something that is so meaningful.
“And Kenna is one of those kids who is so humble. She is not a prima donna on the field or in the classroom. She is so down to earth.”
