UCSB basketball player Amadou Sow and Zosia Amberger of the San Marcos girls water polo team were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Sow led the Gauchos to Big West victories over second-place Hawaii and conference leader UC Irvine. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward poured in 30 points on 12-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-2 on three-pointers, in a 76-66 win over Hawaii.
The .923 field goal percentage was the best by a Gaucho with 10 more attempts since 2000.
In a 64-61 win over UC Irvine, Sow recorded a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
For the week, he shot 20 of 28 (71.4 percent) from the field.
Amberger made nine saves, including several in crunch time, to help San Marcos hold off Santa Barbara High, 5-4, in the championship game of the Channel League Tournament.
The junior goalie started the season on the JV team but moved into the starting spot on the varsity when returner Riley Christian had to have surgery.
Amberger has helped the Royals to a 20-5 record and a No. 3 seeding in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.
The female honorable mention choices for the award were Bella Vasquez (Dos Pueblos soccer) and Ila Lane (UCSB basketball).
The other male candidates for the award include Sean Yamasaki (Dos Pueblos wrestling), Foster Smith (Laguna Blanca basketball), Ryan Wilcox (UCSB volleyball), Abram Carrasco (Westmont basketball) and Cory Dawson (Westmont baseball).
The SBART press luncheon is taking next Monday off because of the Presidents Day holiday.
