San Marcos volleyball player Taylor Wilson and UCSB soccer goalkeeper Ben Roach were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Wilson led the Royals with double-doubles in wins over Dos Pueblos and Santa Ynez to move them into a tie for first place in the Channel League.
In the showdown for first place at DP, the junior outside hitter pounded 17 kills and 14 digs in a four-set victory. At Santa Ynez, she blasted 18 kills and picked up 16 digs in another four-set match.
Roach posted shutouts in UCSB’s first two matches in Big West Conference play. The sophomore out of Santa Barbara High blanked Sacramento State, 2-0, and came back to record a 5-0 clean sheet at Cal State Fullerton. In both matches, Roach came up with saves on point-blank shots to preserve the shutout.
With Roach in the goal, the Gauchos have gone unbeaten in their last 10 matches.
The male honorable mention choices for this week include Noah Billingsley (UCSB soccer), Joshua Rosales (Santa Barbara High football), Henry Herrera (San Marcos football) and Ethan Parrish (Dos Pueblos water polo).
The female athletes considered for the award were Shaina King (San Marcos cross country) and Shaelan Murison (UCSB soccer).
