Bishop Diego volleyball player Siena Urzua and Udy Loza of the Dos Pueblos football team were named Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe.
Urzua, a freshman outside hitter, helped the Cardinals win two matches in the CIF-SS Division 8 playoffs and reach the quarterfinals.
In a first-round match against Pacifica Christian of Santa Monica, last year’s CIF Division 9 runner-up, Urzua had a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs in a five-set victory. She followed that up with a 14-kill performance in a four-set win against Garey in Pomona in the second round.
The two playoff wins are the most by Bishop Diego in more than 20 years, according to coach Dillan Bennett.
The Cardinals go for their third win at second-seeded Trinity Classical in Valencia on Wednesday.
Loza had a big night running the football for Dos Pueblos in a 33-14 win over Santa Ynez last Friday night. The senior rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
The victory gives the Chargers the opportunity to play for a share of the Channel League football title against crosstown rival Santa Barbara High on Friday night at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
Also recognized on Monday were last week’s award winners, Ty Montgomery of Santa Barbara High football and Torre Glasker of the UCSB women’s volleyball team.
This week’s honorable mention choices for the males include: Joseph Pearlman (Dos Pueblos cross country), Conner Lee (Dos Pueblos football), Michael Oldach (Westmont cross country) and Adrian Soracco (Bishop Diego football).
The female honorable mention choices were: Brynn Sofro (San Marcos volleyball), Lindsey Ruddins (UCSB volleyball), Marisa Mancinelli (Bishop Diego golf), Melia Haller (Santa Barbara High golf) and Gabi Brewer (SBCC volleyball).
