Impressive Numbers in Big Wins Earn Athlete of Week Honors for Mikayla Butzke, Henry Herrera

Dos Pueblos volleyball player Mikayla Butzke and running back Henry Herrera of San Marcos football put up some impressive numbers to help their respective teams win big games last week.

On Monday, they were honored for the performances by being named the Athletes of the Week at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.

Butzke, a senior setter, recorded a triple-double in leading Dos Pueblos to a three-set sweep at San Marcos last Thursday in a Channel League showdown for first place. The victory marked the first time in Butzke’s four-year varsity careervthat Chargers beat their Goleta Valley rivals.

She put together a stat line of 10 kills, 23 assists and 27 digs and also served served aces. 

“Those are pretty impressive numbers for three sets,” said her coach Megan O’Carroll.

Herrera was the main man of the San Marcos offense in a 20-14 win over Channel Islands on homecoming night.

The senior running back rushed for 159 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns, including the game winner in the last minute. He also caught four passes for 33 yards.

“We’re really proud of Henry and everything he has done,” said coach Jason Fowle.

The other male athletes nominated for this week’s award included Thibault Candia (UCSB soccer), Leo Nuno (UCSB water polo), Ethan Parrish (Dos Pueblos water polo) and Joseph Pearlman (Dos Pueblos cross country).

The female honorable mention choices were Grace Fuss (Cate tennis), Tallulah Froley (UCSB volleyball), Bri Johnson (Westmont soccer) and Shaelan Murison (UCSB soccer).
