The dominating performances by Chase Mayer of the Carpinteria baseball team and Dos Pueblos track & field standout Josie Morales earned them Athlete of the Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
With Carpinteria battling to keep its CIF playoff hopes alive, Mayer came up big on the mound against Nordhoff. He fired a complete-game, one-hit 2-0 shutout.
Mayer faced just 24 batters, struck out eight and picked off two baserunners.
Morales tore it up at the Santa Barbara County Track & Field Championships in Santa Ynez. She won the 1600 (5:34.19) and 800 (2:28.65) races on the track and then captured the high jump (5-0), becoming the meet’s only champion in three individual events.
The honorable mention choices for the female AOW award include Hana Wigzell (SBCC Swimming), Olivia Geyling (Dos Pueblos lacrosse) and Kate Pipkin (UCSB water polo).
The other male nominees for the award were: Jack Dashwood (UCSB baseball) Ethan Ha (Cate tennis), Buba Fofunah (Cate track & field), Nathaniel Getachew (Dos Pueblos track & field) and Jack Deardorff (Cate baseball).
Next Monday’s press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe will be the final one of the school year.
The SBART’s Evening With the Athletes, honoring the Athletes of the Year in prep and college sports and the prep and college coaches of the year, is set for Wednesday, May 8, at the Marjorie Luke Theater.
