Elsa Fryer, who captured a silver medal in the tennis singles competition at the Special Olympics Fall Games in Orange County, was named the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Fryer defeated a male opponent in a three-set match to reach the final. She was beaten in the final by another male opponent. Fryer also played in the doubles tournament and finished in fourth place.
“On the court, she is definitely a warrior,” her coach Liz Frech said. “She has her game face on, but she smiles between points.”
Frech said Fryer is a delight to coach.
“At practices, she sets a good example by working hard as well as complimenting and encouraging teammates,” said Frech.
Special Olympics of Santa Barbara is looking for coaches for its spring season sports. The sports include aquatics, athletics, bocce, basketball, golf and gymnastics. The season starts in February.
