Mike Soracco had a break-out game for the undefeated Bishop Diego football team, while the duo of Renee Handley and Sarah Yang of the San Marcos tennis team won all their sets during two matches last week to remain perfect on season.
Their performances earned them Athlete of Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Soracco, a senior running back for the Cardinals, rushed for a season-high 191 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns in a 43-20 win over Immanuel of Reedley. Immanuel came into the game as the No. 1 team in the Central Section and was ranked fourth in the state for Division 5 by CalHiSports.com
Handley and Yang are a big reason San Marcos won its first Channel League tennis title in school history. The pair improved to 38-0 after wins over Dos Pueblos and Cate last week. They handed Cate’s No. 1 doubles team its first loss of the season.
The honorable mention choices for the awards included Mason Bigelow (Santa Barbara High football), Oscar Garcia (Carpinteria football), Sal Briceno (Carpinteria water polo), Erica Schroeder (San Marcos cross country), Phoebe Grunt (UCSB volleyball), Taryn Stevens (San Marcos volleyball).
