Dos Pueblos wrestler Cameron Cox and Jessica Escalante of the SBCC track and field team have been named Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
Cox became DP’s first CIF-Southern Section wrestling champion in five years as he won the 132-pound weight class title last Saturday at the Central Division championship meet at Grand Terrace High. Cox defeated Ventura’s Luke Tada, 1-0, in the semifinals, avenging a loss against him in the Channel League finals the previous week. He then posted a first-period pin over Ethyn Ewing of Anaheim-Canyon in the final.
Escalante was a four-time winner for SBCC at the Western State Conference Relays. The sophomore from Dos Pueblos anchored the 4 x 100 relay team to a school record of 48.89, ran on the victorious 4 x 400 and 1600 sprint medley relay units and captured the javelin.
The honorable mention choices for female athletes include Jordyn Lilly (Bishop Diego basketball), Clair Watkins (UCSB basketball) and Kelly Records (UCSB swimming).
The male athletes recognized as honorable mention were Wade Allen (UCSB swimming), Bas Van Leersum (SBCC track and field), Dalton Kelly (UCSB baseball), Andrew Vasquez (Westmont baseball) and Bolden Brace (Santa Barbara High basketball).
Due to the Presidents Day holiday last week, Athlete of the Week awards for performances from two weeks ago were presented at Monday’s SBART press luncheon. The winners were Dos Pueblos wrestler Jeffy Uyesaka and Cate girls basketball player Brittany Newsome.
Uyesaka won the 138-pound division title at the Channel League Championships and was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler at the lower weights. Newsome scored 23 points to lead Cate over Frontier League champion Carpinteria to finish in a tie for second place with Foothill Tech and force a league playoff for an automatic CIF berth. In the playoff game, she scored all 10 of her points in the second half and grabbed 8 rebounds in a comeback win.
