It was rivalry week for San Marcos, and Royals Anika Wilson and Nathan Coffey rose to the occasion, leading their respective teams to victories.
Wilson, an outside hitter on the girls volleyball team, and Coffey, a kicker, linebacker and fullback for the football squad, were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week for their big-time performances against their crosstown rivals in Channel League games.
Wilson posted 10 kills and nine digs in sweep over Santa Barbara and followed that up with a 24-kill performance in a five-set win at Dos Pueblos. In the win over DP, Wilson had a .330 hitting average for the match.
Coffey was all over the field in San Marcos’ 27-10 victory over Dos Pueblos — the first league win for the Royals in five years. The linebacker recorded three quarterback sacks and was in on several tackles; he served as a lead blocker for Ivan Reyes, who ran for two touchdowns; he gave the Royals good field position as a kick returner and he booted two field goals.
There were several other noteworthy performances during the week. The honorable mention choices on the men’s side are Blake Parrish (Dos Pueblos water polo), Stephen McCaffery (Laguna Blanca football), Isaiah Washington (Cate football), Daniel Molina (Bishop Diego football), Brandon Evans (SBCC football), Elijah King (SBCC football).
The female athletes considered for the award include Bella Vigna (Dos Pueblos golf), Kaitlyn Crooker (SBCC volleyball) and Erica Schroeder (San Marcos cross country).
