Being swift on their feet enabled Erica Schroeder and Omar Miranda to do some exciting things in their respective sports last week.
Schroeder, a sophomore at San Marcos, used a strong finishing kick to take first place in the Channel League cross meet at Dos Pueblos.
Miranda provided spark for the Carpinteria football team by catching two touchdown passes and intercepting a pair of Oak Park passes, one of which he returned for an 80- yard touchdown, in a 45-24 win over Oak Park.
The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table on Monday honored Schroeder and Miranda as the Athletes of the Week.
In her first cross country race, Schroeder kept a steady pace on a hot afternoon and picked off runners as the three-mile run progressed. She won in 18:26.71. Schroeder is the reigning league and CIF Division 3 champion in the 800 meters.
Miranda, the point guard on the basketball team, exhibited the good hands and quick feet he uses for basketball on the gridiron for the Warriors. He caught five passes in the game for 137 yards. On his interception return, he zigzagged all over the field and beat everyone to the end zone.
Athletes who were honorable mention choices for this week’s award include: Bella Vigna (Dos Pueblos girls golf), Ali Spindt (UCSB women’s volleyball), Inri Cortez (San Marcos football), Abel Gonzalez (Bishop Diego football), Ezra Taylor (SBCC football).
