Christian Widmer of San Marcos and Ady Willett of Dos Pueblos made the plays to help their respective teams win big games last week.
Their efforts earned them Athlete of the Week honors by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
Widmer’s setting and overall play were instrumental in San Marcos beating Santa Barbara High in four sets and claiming the Royals’ first Channel League boys volleyball championship since 2003. Widmer dished out more than 60 assists in the thrilling match. He also scored a big point on a dump play during a wild 32-30 fourth set.
Willett collected a pair of hits, scored a run and made some big catches in center field to help Dos Pueblos blank Buena, 3-0, and take sole possession of first place in the Channel League softball race.
Willett used her speed to run down four fly balls and rob Buena batters of hits. Later in the week, she belted her first home run in a game at the Thousand Oaks Tournament.
The other female athletes nominated for this week’s award include Kristen Clark (UCSB softball), Lauren Stratman (Westmont tennis), Adilene Aldapa (San Marcos track), Alice Cen (SBCC softball) and Natasha Feshback (Santa Barbara High track).
The male athletes chosen as honorable mention were Joshua Barnard (Westmont tennis), Jason Xiao (Cate tennis), Alex Roderick (Santa Barbara High swimming), Gabe Grandcolas (Santa Barbara High baseball) and Shane Rowan (Westmont track).
