Jill Giannini helped her Bishop Diego girls soccer team to three wins last week, while Jack Baker put together an impressive stat line, leading the Santa Barbara High boys basketball team to its sixth straight Channel League win without a loss.
Their performances earned Giannini and Baker Athlete of the Week honors at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
A Baker, a 6-foot-5 senior, had a monster game in a 66-63 victory over Ventura. He scored 18 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and blocked nine shots.
Giannini is making an impact as a freshman for the Cardinals. In three wins last week, she had a goal and four assists as Bishop improved to 8-4-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Frontier League.
The honorable mention candidates this week are Jenna Phreaner (San Marcos water polo), Sophia Soriano (Cate water polo), Amber Melgoza (Santa Barbara High basketball), Keller Mochel (Cate boys soccer), Wesley Ghan-Gibson (San Marcos boys basketball) and Junior Perez (Dos Pueblos wrestling).
