Dos Pueblos baseball player Gabe Speier and Providence Hall basketball player Olivia Barroca were announced as Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Barroca led the Lions in Saturday’s CIF Championship game at Mater Dei High School with 16 points while making four huge 3-pointers that helped Providence Hall earn its first-ever CIF title.
“Olivia Barroca over there, has done a tremendous job for us. She’s the epitome of what we’re trying to do as coaches,” said Lions head coach Ernie Quiroz. “Someone who takes the moment, seizes the moment, and rises to the occasion.”
Speier produced at the plate and on the mound for Dos Pueblos last week. The senior left-hander collected 10 strikeouts in a game while lasting 7 2/3 innings. Speier was 2-for-4 at the plate in that game as well. Earlier in the week, Speier was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a home run in a victory for Dos Pueblos on Tuesday. The Chargers were 3-0 last week.
Honorable Mentions were Bryan Fernandez, Dos Pueblos Track; Alan Williams, UCSB Basketball; Drake Gilliland, Dos Pueblos Baseball; Cody Bidlow, SBCC Track; Jackson Powell, Santa Barbara Tennis; Tugce Canitez, Westmont Basketball; Stamatia Scarvelis, Dos Pueblos Track; Niema Poindexter, Dos Pueblos Track; Veronika Gulvin, Dos Pueblos Softball
