In keeping with the spirit of March Madness, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week come from college basketball.
UCSB senior James Nunnally was named the male winner for his performances in wins over Pacific and UC Davis. He poured in a season-high 28 points, had career-high eight assists with no turnovers in the Pacific game. In a Senior Night game against Davis, he scored a team-high 21 points.
Nunnally and the Gauchos are playing in the Big West Tournament this week in Anaheim,seeking their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The female athlete of the week is Westmont’s Tugce Canitez. The junior led the Warriors into Monday night’s championship game of the GSAC Tournament with stellar performances in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the two wins over The Master’s and Biola, she averaged 23 points and 9.5 rebounds. She shot 58.1 percent from the field and 89 percent from the free-throw line.
