Female Athlete of the Week Amanda Schulenberg kept the Laguna Blanca girls basketball season alive by scoring 21 points in a 60-57 win at Hesperia Christian Saturday in the second round of the playoffs. The Owls are the only local prep basketball team moving on to the third round.
Male Athlete of the Week Tim Freeman of the UCSB swim team had quite a meet at the Big West Championships, breaking a 20-year-old Big West record previously held by Brian Pajer of UC Irvine in 1990 in the 100 breaststroke. The previous time was 54.26, and Freeman touched the wall at a 53.90, shattering the record. Freeman’s time qualifies him for a NCAA “A” cut standard. He also won the 200 breaststroke by setting a UCSB record.
