Male Athlete of the Week Randy Person led the Cate football team to a 48-0 win Victor Valley in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday by scoring four touchdowns in the first half. He ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, threw for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown. The Rams play top-ranked Windward at Carpinteria on Friday night.
Female Athlete of the Week Kelsey Soos has led the SBCC women’s volleyball team to 18 wins in its last 19 matches by running a balanced offense. In a thrilling 5-set win over fourth-ranked Hancock last week, three Vaquero hitters tallied 13 kills in the match, which put the team in position to win its first WSC North title since 1998. Soos, a freshman out of Santa Ynez High School, also leads the conference in aces.
