The Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are presented by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table to deserving individuals who have excelled both academically and athletically.
The students are selected by the principal, senior counselor, athletic directors, and coaches at the various high schools and colleges participating in the Athletic Round Table weekly luncheons.
The significance of this award goes beyond just recognizing individual students with outstanding academic and athletic achievement.
It is an acknowledgment that the community lauds the unique abilities and accomplishments of these exceptional young people.
It is the goal of the Athletic Round Table to remind the community, including children and parents, that it is possible for a student to participate in athletics and yet maintain outstanding academic achievement.
Criteria for Selection

The nominated student should participate in high school or college level varsity athletics.

Academic qualification of the individual to be honored should include a 3.5 grade point average or better in conjunction with other scholarly activities such as honor societies, or extracurricular activities such as science or culture clubs.
- This award has traditionally been given to a senior who is involved in school activities.
